Installing A Carbon Monoxide Detector

February 15 2016 , Written by james Pender

On average, around 40 to 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning every year within the U.K alone. Along with these deaths there are also numerous instances of poisoning causes other health problems and injuries. If more people knew the facts about carbon monoxide then less people would suffer fatalties each year.

There is a simple, inexpensive device that will alert you and your family to the presence of carbon monoxide allowing them all to exit the home before any injuries or deaths occur.

This device is a carbon monoxide alarm which come in a number of different varieties. There are devices that will not alarm but need to be monitored for any colour change. These are called spot alarms which are cheap but do have a disadvantage in that they have to be constantly looked at. The trouble with this is, that if you forget or are sleeping, then you have no way of knowing if you or your family are being poisoned by CO gas.

The best type of alarm to have is one that sounds an alarm when carbon monoxide is detected. There are 2 types available, one is battery and one is mains powered. Mains powered alarms will obviously need to be hard wired in by a professional, whereas a battery one can easily be installed by yourself. They both have a life span of around 7 years before they need changing due to the sensor deteriorating.

When installing a carbon monoxide detector, take careful note of the manufacturer instructions as many people install them in the wrong position, often too close to fuel burning appliances which could trigger false alarms, check here for more help The detectors should be positioned around 1 to 3 meters from the appliances and at the correct height. A further alarm should be located outside of any sleeping areas. Remember to check your alarm has the correct British Standards and use a reputable brand such Kidde, Honeywell or Fireangel.
